6 Party Word Games for Adults Without Extra Equipment

Friends are over, dinner is finished and nobody brought a game. These six options give you a way to start, with short rules you can read together. Categories comes first, using just your device; the others need only conversation and listening.

1. Categories: just your device

Gather two or more people around one phone. Open Categories, choose a game mode and follow its instructions: the category gives you a topic, and you supply the words. For your first round, pick a topic everyone knows and read the selected mode’s instructions together before starting.

2. Two Truths and a Lie

Take turns sharing three statements about yourself: two true and one made up. Everyone else may ask one question before voting for the lie. Reveal the answer, then let the next person speak. Mix an ordinary detail with something surprising so the answer is not obvious.

3. Word Associations

Start with a word. The next person says something it brings to mind: coffee, morning, sunshine, beach. Keep going around the group without repeating a word. If a connection puzzles everyone, explain it in one sentence. When ideas run out, start a new chain with a different topic.

4. Twenty Questions

One person thinks of a familiar object. The group has up to twenty yes-or-no questions to identify it; a direct guess counts as a question too. Try something like, “Would it fit in a backpack?” Whoever guesses correctly chooses the next object. Reveal it if the group reaches the limit.

5. A Story in Turns

Begin with a sentence: “I opened the door and found a suitcase that wasn’t mine.” Each person adds one sentence while keeping earlier events in the story. After two trips around the group, the next person supplies an ending. Choose a mystery, travel story or absurd adventure before you start.

6. I’m Packing a Bag

The first person says, “I’m packing a bag and taking a hat.” The next repeats that item and adds another. Keep building the list in the same order. If someone forgets part of it, reconstruct it together and start a new round. Try a picnic or dinner-shopping list for a change.

Pick one game and finish a round before switching. Categories gets things started with one phone; stories and associations keep the conversation going without preparing anything else.
